The Associated Student Body is trying to arrange a meeting with the cafeteria president and Togo’s to discuss the prospect of incorporating Togo’s sandwiches into the cafeteria menu at reasonable prices.
Limited variety and price of cafeteria food have been constant complaints by the student body. ASB is now taking initiative.
Togo’s contacted the school in early October—just as the new year was getting under way and just their new store was opening in downtown Los Altos, according to Assistant Principal and ASB advisor Wynne Satterwhite.
“Togo’s wants the sandwiches in the cafeteria. Now it is only a matter of the cafeteria allowing Togo’s to sell them,” ASB member, sophmore Jeff Kaufman said.
However, Togo’s must go through the district office and fill out the appropriate paper work before official discussions can begin.
“Togo’s needs to fill out a contract like any other company selling merchandise on campus. Pepsi needs a contract to sell sodas; Togo’s needs a contract to sell sandwiches,” Satterwhite said.
As of now, Satterwhite says, it looks as if the discussions will start next semester in January—after the break and finals.
By adding Togo’s sandwiches to the cafeteria menu, the school will be encouraging more students to eat at the school rather than driving downtown or to a restaurant for lunch.
Last year, ASB member Ana Jauregui initiated a petition of cafeteria food prices that gathered between 300 and 500 signatures. Because of this, and common “pricey cafeteria food” sentiment, a key point of the meeting will be establishing a “reasonable price” for the sandwiches.
“The entire process of bringing the sandwiches to school would be pointless if the students could not afford to buy them, so the price...will be a key point during the discussions,” Jeff said.
