This school is home to a large variety of unique talents. One person, especially, stands out in the hallways. Senior Margo Liptsin loves history, art, culture and traveling and is the president and founder of the prestigious Model United Nations club that meets on Fridays at lunch in room 408. Margo is determined to be a diplomat or ambassador when she grows up and wants to major in international relations or political science in college. She got the idea for Model UN the summer before her junior year.
“Our school and local community is diverse and that’s wonderful, but it lacks a certain international perspective. That’s what Model UN was meant to do: to get kids thinking about world issues, learn about a different point of view. Model UN is perfect for that,” Margo said.
The club, which started with very few people, has a goal “to foster a spirit for a peaceful global community through an increased knowledge of and participation in activities of government, geography, law, culture, and social systems.” In the past year it has grown to over 40 members. Margo has high aspirations for the club’s future.
“I hope Model UN sticks around after I graduate, and I hope we can go on to win lots of awards. It’s almost scary how much of an improvement we made in one year,” Margo said.
The club did well last year and even went to the national Model UN conference in New York, which it plans on attending once more this year.
“It gets very competitive. It makes the world seem very close to each one of us. It shows us how much in control we really are, how small everyone is, but how powerful we are when together we negotiate from very different perspectives for a better life tomorrow,” Margo said.
In addition to being active in Model UN, Margo is also the president of the National Honor Society and fences at the Stanford Fencing Club. Margo plans to pursue her passion for world issues in the future.
Margo has been to many European countries, and over the summer she studied at the Sorbonne University in France, where she took a French language and civilization course.
“Whatever I end up doing later on will include these things. I don’t care about the money as much as long as I’m an intelligent woman that can travel and educate herself constantly through a vibrant occupation,” Margo said.
