The boys water polo team, which has been one of the most consistent and successful teams at the school, has high expectations for this season and is off to another great start.
“We’re hoping to win CCS,” senior Zach Zwarenstein said.
Other CCS contenders include Menlo, Saint Francis and Sacred Heart. For many of the seniors on the team, this is their last chance to win a championship, something they also had high hopes for last season.
However, the loss of two key starting players last year, including the goalie, prevented the team from becoming champions.
One new member of the team this year is assistant coach John Walker, backing up head coach Jon Wiener. He has been a great asset so far this year due to his extensive water polo experience. Walker coached both men’s and women’s Cal Poly teams to Collegiate Water Polo Association National Champions. He has additional coaching experience from coaching a high school team in Fresno to two time California Interscholastic Federation champions.
“He’s an excellent addition to the coaching staff. He’s been involved in the sport for a long time and brings good advice to the team,” Zach said.
Some of the team’s strengths this year include its goalkeeping, thanks to goalie junior Mike Peterson. Another strength is its two meter play, a result of having junior Tyler Smith, a member of the national team, on their squad.
The team has already played its first league game, defeating Monta Vista. The team hopes for another undefeated season in league. Gunn will be their most likely opposition. The team has many upcoming tournaments. They expect to fix some of the problems they had in a recent double overtime loss to Saint Francis at the tournament.
“Counterattack to offense is one of our weaknesses, but we’re working on it,” Walker said.
However, the team has had some early success having already played and won against Saint Francis, Menlo and Sacred Heart.
“We’re going to go first in league, win this tournament and get first in CCS. That’s why I took this job. This team’s way too good not to,” Walker said.
