VAHIG MANUGIAN’S ALFA ROMEO SPIDER VELOCE

The following is a story not meant for the weak of heart. It is a story of true love. It is a tale of the undeniable bond between a man and … his car.
The car: a 1982 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce.
The man: junior Vahig Manugian.
Alfa Romeo is an exotic Italian car manufacturer that has acquired a great amount of prestige during its near-century tenure. To this day, Alfa Romeo still produces some of the most exotic cars to come out of Italy. The brand is recognized as an elite automobile manufacturer worldwide. Its cars are even included in video games such as “Gran Turismo 3.”
Just three years ago, Vahig and his father decided to purchase the Alfa Romeo, and it was love at first sight. However, Vahig believes that the word “love” is unable to describe the passion he feels toward his car.
“Love is an understatement,” Vahig said.
This obsession can only be explained by the beauty and performance of the vehicle. The car is a two-seat convertible designed with classic curves. Unlike modern cars, this automobile does not have any sharp lines that attempt to create a sense of power. The smooth lines give a feeling of classical elegance and beauty.
Maybe Vahig can describe it better with his explanation of the exterior’s “sumptuous lines [and] curvaceous body,” not to mention the sports-car-red paint. The black convertible top can be pulled up to cover the tan leather seats if it ever gets too cold. However, the top does show the one visible sign of any wear and tear on this vehicle. Near the plastic rear window, there is a rip that has created a sizable hole. Vahig has already taken the first step in fixing this flaw by purchasing a replacement top. It’s only a matter of time before he puts the new top on and returns his car to perfection.
Other than this minor taint Vahig has never had any mechanical trouble with his car during his three years of ownership. This can be attributed to the fact that his concern for the well being of his car extends so far as to wash it every weekend.
Similar to the way that anyone will defend a loved family member or pet, Vahig is always able to find a comeback to stand up for his car when any negative remarks are made.
“It may be lacking in the horsepower, torque, seating and safety categories, but it more than makes up for it with its extraordinary sex appeal,” Vahig said.
While most people value their family or even pets over material possessions, Vahig does not fit into this mold. He has stated that his car was definitely more important than any of his pets, and he even once claimed that the Alfa Romeo ranked higher on his list than his brother Arek Manugian on a love meter. These opinions make it clear that Vahig’s favorite hobby is his Alfa Romeo.
“Nothing beats driving with the top down, the wind blowing through my chest hair. Nothing,” Vahig said.
